There are two teams leading the league at 7-2, Bairro and Terra Branca Pitbulls. Terra Branca is on a 7 game winning streak led by Kwame Lee, who is averaging 21.9 points and 14.9 rebounds despite shooting a career low beyond the arc at 18.2%. “We are playing our best game,” said Admar Depina, after 81-74 win against Campana Lanca. Depina, Terra Branca’s Captain, said everyone has their roles on the team and they trust each other, which has contributed to their winning streak. Pitbulls’ last loss was against Campana by 10 points in their second game of the season. It was also the last time they lost a game. Campana never led this game. They shot a season low 21% from the 3-point line, from a team that solely relies on 3-points shot. Terra Branca forced Campana to 9 turnovers and most importantly held Manny Monteiro to zero points and zero assist. Lee finished the game with 23 points and 17 rebounds.

The game between ABC and Bairro had a perfect narrative after Joao ‘Bidion’ Gomes left Bairro to join ABC during after in week 6. Barrio’s stingy defense effectively clogged the passing lanes and limited ABC’s ball movement causing turnovers. They went on an 11-2 run to start the game. ABC was missing majority of their big man including Bidion and Naxo Faria who generally controls the pace of the game primarily ball handling during crunch time. ABC went into the half trailing 9 points, and adjusted their game in the second half but Bairro did not let down. They handed ABC their third consecutive loss this season, 67-57. ABC is now seeding 5th tied with Volcanic at 5-4 but they are still defensive the best team in the league allowing only 51 points per game. Bairro’s shooter, Tony Barros scored 27 points and 4 steals, while ABC, guard Carlos Gomes finished with 23 points.

 

Meanwhile, Lenfer has won 3 consecutive games while 7 Stars is on a 7 game losing streak. With the two added players, George Guyton and Jonathan Langston, 7Stars look like a completely different team. 7Stars played their best game thus far this week against Lenfer that ended in a double overtime after Kevin Miranda shot a miraculous 3 pointer to tie the game at 64 with only 02.9 seconds left in regulation . 7 Stars lost in double overtime 86-78. Miranda finished with 23 points, shooting 43% (7-16) beyond the 3-point line. Guyton recorded 12 assists, setting the league record. However, Lenfer prevailed in this game behind a strong performance by Clayton Moreno, who recorded his 8th double-double, with 30pts and 11rebs. Tino Brazao showed up again this game with an outstanding performance 16pts, 12rebs, 7 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. Lenfer has emerged as a contender scoring more than 80 points in their last 3 games. On the other hand, 7Stars will certainly disappoint teams come playoffs with a number of talent added to their roster right before the signing deadline.

 

This week Volcanic played the struggling Brava Magic who is still searching to find their niche despite revamping their roster. Volcanic limited Sayvonn Houston to 14-points, 6-rebs who is the king of double-doubles. The Magic has obvious talent and they have great players, but they struggle to finishing games and keeping leads. Brava will play Terra Branca next week.

ACVB league has become the main subject in the barbershop and amongst community. The hype is real.
